Skimboards

Many of you will remember the old skiffle boards we used in our youth to skim along the shallows of a flat beach. Sandskates are the next generation. Built with shape and rocker in the nose, they ride a little more directionally and even out into the waves for some big air. They actually turn and perform more like a skateboard.

Sandskates can be used like a skiffle board, i.e. to skim along a flat part of the beach, or can be ridden out towards the waves. The guys from NEMO have provided a how to ride guide to get you going:

RIDING TIPS

Always check the water for rocks and debris before sandskating.
If you are beginning - start slowly : You can always get a good ride at slow speed.

  • Ensure your board has a good cover of wax or deck grip.
Practise throwing your board down on minimal coverage of water : 1-2cm (low tide is ideal)
  • A thinner layer of water will give a faster longer ride.
  • Try to jump onto the board, landing with both feet at once.
  • Keep your feet spaced approximately 50cm apart.
  • If riding into shore breaks don't lose sight of your board - it may become invisible under the white water.

Respect the beach and the people around you.

BOARD CARE

  • Avoid exposure to heat as it may deform your board. After using, place the tail of your board in the sand with nose pointing to the sky to avoid direct sun
  • Don't leave the board in the boot of a car.
  • Always rinse off salt water after use.
  • The base is not impervious to scratching - however scratches will not harm the performance of the board.
  • Severe scratches or burrs in the base should be carefully trimmed or removed with a sharp scraper.
  • If the edge of your board is damaged, do not ride it, as this will allow water to enter your board and cause delamination. To repair, allow to dry, sand smooth then seal with a marine grade sealing product.

Avoid skimming where people might get hit by a board. Keep control of you board at all times.
